HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM SAVED (GOING TO HEAVEN)
God created you, loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life. All of us have sinned and our sin has separated us from God and paradise in heaven. So what must we do?
Some Christians say it's easy to be saved from death and assured you are going to heaven when you die; just say a simple prayer and you’re in, saved, and heaven bound. Some say just be baptized or go to church at least a few times each year. Is that truly what Jesus said and taught? Jesus said He is the only way to enter heaven and have eternal life with Him.
Jesus was asked how many will be saved and His response recorded in Matthew 7 and Luke 13 is sobering, even astonishing. Luke 13: 23-24;
Then one said to Him, “Lord, are there few who are saved?”
And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able." Matthew 7:13-14; “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it."
Jesus made it clear that most people will perish, even many of those who “seek” to enter heaven will not be able because it is “difficult”. He said we must “strive” to “enter”. Sounds very plain that salvation is not easily obtained yet it is very possible to grasp a hold of it and you can know that you are a child of God headed for eternity with Him in paradise. The Bible says the Holy Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God if we are not deceived but are truly saved.
Confessing a simple prayer to God is an important first step and a beginning but Jesus and the apostles never taught anyone that by only saying a simple prayer eternal life in heaven is guaranteed. So what is the answer? The answer of course is found in the words of Jesus and His apostles recorded in the bible.
Jesus said He is the door and the only way to the Father in heaven. From start to finish the Bible teaches us that you and I must repent (regret our past sins or wrong doings and change our direction away from sin and selfishness toward God and submit to His teachings or commands)! Repentance is the common theme throughout the bible and necessary for eternal life!
So how is Jesus the “door” to heaven? Jesus came and died in your place for your sins so that your sins may be removed and thus the penalty of death against you removed as well if you choose to repent. By faith Christians believe Jesus died and rose again from the dead and is alive now and forever more and has power over death to give us life.
So what must we do to be saved and have eternal life?
- Realize and admit that you are a sinner and deserve punishment (death) for your sins or rebellion against God.
"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" Romans 3:10
"... for there is no difference. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23
- Realize you CAN NOT save yourself no matter how “good” you are or by the many good things you have done. If we follow the laws and commands of God and yet disregard that we are in need of a savior, then all the good works we have done and present to God are subject to the cures of sin and death.
He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5
- Realize that Jesus Christ was innocent and sinless but died on the cross to pay the price of death for your sins.
24and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 1st Peter 2:24
…Him (Jesus) who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood Revelation 1:5
- Simply by faith ask and receive Jesus Christ into your heart as your personal Savior and Lord.
" ...Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shall be saved, and thy house."" Acts 16:30,31
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
For with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Romans 10:10
- Repent and be baptized in water in Jesus name for the forgiveness of your sins. Rely or trust on Jesus and ask to receive the Holy Spirit promised by Jesus to lead and teach you all your life.
“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:36-38
- Make Jesus your “Lord” or owner of your very life and obey His commands. BELIEVE IN HIM (to believe means to trust and obey). Endure to the end of your life. Never turn away again from Jesus or His teachings and commands. Jesus asks for our faith in Him as our redemmer and our obedience to Him because we love Him.
He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." John 3:36
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Matthew 7:21
And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. Matthew 24:12-13
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. Mark 8:35
He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. Revelation 3:5
- If you do wrong (sin again) be quick to repent again and once again follow Christ. He is faithful to forgive those who truly are repentant.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1st John 1:9
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE SAVED?
Repent and follow Jesus, His word, teachings and His ways.
Start by praying this prayer, and mean it with all your heart.
Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and unless you save me I am lost forever. Forgive me for the sins I have committed against you. I thank you for shedding your blood and dying for me on a cross. I come to you now, Lord the best way I know how, and ask you to save me. I now receive you as my Savior and I choose to make you my Master and follow your ways all my life. Amen.
Now be determined to conform to God’s word and to follow Jesus and trust in Him. Ask the Lord to direct you to a Bible believing, full gospel teaching church to help you grow into a mature person in Christ Jesus and be baptized in Jesus name for the remission of sins. Ask Jesus to fill you or baptize you with His Spirit (Holy Spirit).
End by enduring to the end of this life. Love God with all that is within you and your neighbor as yourself.
